Countries around the world are on a race to put a halt to a new form of swine influenza virus. This virus is reported to have killed more than a 100 people in Mexico alone as of yesterday.

People around the world now fear that the disease might become a threat to the global community, hence the high alert for swine flu virus especially among airline passengers.

But what really is swine flu? What are its symptoms?

Swine influenza virus or SIV is a viral infection that usually affects pigs. It has the ability to cross species to other hosts like humans and may be spread from one person to another. Human transmission of swine flu occurs when there is contact with infected body fluids such as saliva or mucus when sneezing. The virus can be transferred when couching, sneezing and contact with contaminated surfaces and materials.

The signs and symptoms of swine flue are similar to that of the common cold or flu. This includes fever which may or may not be accompanied by chills, sore throat, breathing difficulties, fatigue and headaches. In some cases, diarrhea or vomiting may also occur.

As of press time, the swine flu virus is suspected to have hit countries like the United States, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Israel, Australia and Canada. There are also confirmed reports saying more than 400 individuals are hospitalized in Mexico due to swine flu infection.

Reduce your risk of swine flu infection by practicing proper hygiene. Avoid contact with persons who show signs and symptoms of flu. Get enough rest and sleep. It is also helpful to practice regular hand washing.
